Abstract

554,224. Converting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 20, 1942, No. 16430. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1941. [Class 38 (ii)] In a polyphase converter comprising valves 3a of the immersion ignitor type and wherein ignition impulses are applied to the electrodes 16 through a wave-distorting network 32, 33, 34 and transformer 30, and pick-up potentials are applied to anode shields 17 from a transformer 20, a source of negative bias, such as rectifier 40, is inserted between the star-point of the transformer 20 and the cathodes of the valves, and a reverse current relay 45 is provided on the D.C. side which relay on the occurrence of a back-fire operates to de-energize transformers 20 and 30 by opening contacts 49. Thus the ignition electrodes are de-energized and the anode shields are left under negative bias from rectifier 40, feedback to the back-firing valve being prevented by opening of a high-speed relay 72. Similar protection is afforded under over-load conditions by opening of contacts 56 by operation of an overcurrent relay by current transformers 57 on the primary side of the main transformer 12.
