Abstract

550,872. Converting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 24, 1941, No. 9385. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1940. [Class 38 (ii)] In a converting arrangement in which power is transmitted between an A.C. network 1 and a D.C. network 2 through a transformer 3 and a group of mercury arc discharge devices 4 of the type in which the moment of ignition is adjustably controlled by current impulses supplied to immersion ignitor electrodes 9 through gridcontrolled auxiliary valves 14, exciting potentials from a source independent of the load are applied to shields 8 closely surrounding the anodes 7 to assist ionization and pick-up of the main arc. These potentials may be derived from a separate transformer or from taps on the transformer 16 from which the ignition current impulses are derived. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 546,738.
