Abstract
640,498. Converting. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1946, No. 4485. Convention date, April 12, 1941. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] A mercury-cathode device for use as an inverter, and having an igniter 82 and an auxiliary anode 81 in a separate chamber screened off from the main anode 80 (see Group XL (a)), is used in a circuit in which an extinguishing pulse is applied simultaneously to the main and auxiliary anodes. Control voltage 72 applied to relay tube 66 caused it to conduct during positive half-cycles, and these are converted, by transformer 64 in its cathode circuit, into pulses of steep wave-front which are applied simultaneously to main anode 80 and auxiliary anode 81 by condensers 78, 79 respectively. Igniter pulses are provided by circuit 83. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the control pulse is produced by a rotating cam acting on a switch in series with a battery. The device may also be used as a switch for high-tension D.C., the control pulses being applied for example by a -push-button. Specification 520,183 is referred to.
