Abstract

421,783. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. June 5, 1934, No. 16711. Convention date, June 7, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] A lamp having either a solid or liquid cathode has an auxiliary electrode between the main electrodes and connected to one of them through a capacitor, and means are provided, responsive to a discharge of the capacitor, for producing a voltage impulse between the electrodes. In one form, Fig. 1, a ring- shaped auxiliary electrode 12 is connected to the cathode 4 through a winding 13 and a capacity 15 which is charged from the mains 6, 7 through a resistance 14. The capacity 15 discharges between the electrodes 12 and 4 and a voltage surge is produced in winding 9 in the anode lead. The winding 9 and a resistance 10 serve as ballast impedance. Varying the resistance 14 controls the light intensity of the tube when an alternating- current supply is used. In a modification for use on alternating-current supply only the condenser 15 is charged through a phase controller which is varied to produce variations in illumination. The filling may comprise mercury or sodium or neon or krypton or mixtures thereof. Dimensions of a typical lamp are given. Specification 252,408, [Class 39 (i)], is referred to.
