Abstract

501,854. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Nov. 12, 1937, No. 31148. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-pressure mercury-vapour discharge lamp wherein L the distance between the terminations of the discharge path in full operation is less than the mean distance of either of those terminatioms from the envelope, (i) the ratio of power consumed (W) in full operation to L exceeds 1,000 watts/cm.; (ii) the refractory electrodes of material such as tungsten become incandescent; and (iii) the red ratio of total light emitted from the lamp by a filter known as Wratten No. 25 is not less than 6. If V is voltage between the terminations then V/L is 250 and 50 volts per cm. corresponding to running pressures of 50 and 10 atmospheres. Forced cooling may be applied to the lamp. Sizes of lengths of discharges and electrodes corresponding to consumptions of 250, 500 and 1,000 watts are given. In one form the running electrodes 2, 2<1> are 1À5 mm. apart and have starting electrodes 3, 3<1> behind them. The sizes of the quartz envelope are given and the red ratio is 9 with initial efficiency of 42 lumens /watt. Specifications 482,070 and 485,489 are referred to.
