Abstract

478,208. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and DAVIES, L. J. July 13, 1936, No. 19422. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure mercury-vapour discharge lamp is provided with a pair of elongated electrodes 2, 3 at least one of which is thermionic, in the form of a truncated-V, the arc being swept to and fro along their length by a magnetic field. An extended light source of high brilliancy is obtained. If the arc current is direct, the magnetic field should be alternating, and vice versa. Preferably the narrow end of the V is at the top, where the arc is naturally driven by convective forces. As shown in Fig. 3 the electrodes may be made of tungsten sheet 5 enclosing electron-emissive material 6, except for a narrow slit at the tip. The lamp may be externally heated to maintain the vapour pressure,
