Abstract
501,920. Discharge lamps. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and BARASCH, H. P. Aug. 7, 1937, No. 21811. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure mercury-vapour lamp has a pair of non-thermionic main electrodes and at least one auxiliary thermionic electrode in the form of a coil attached to a shank portion of a main electrode and a current is fed to a heating coil disposed outside the tube for starting purposes. In the form shown, the D.C. tube has a coil 5 of coated tungsten or molybdenum wire secured to one electrode 3 and the tube is surrounded by a heating coil 6 on a former carried by an adjustable support 9. Current is applied to the coil 6 until the discharge chamber has reached the requisite temperature and the electrodes are connected to their supply when the heating switch is opened. The two switches may be actuated simultaneously by a dash-pot member, or the two circuits may be controlled by a thermal switch. In the case of an A.C. supply two auxiliary electrodes are provided. The pressure of the mercury is at least twenty atmospheres and a tube having a discharge space 8 mm. diameter by 20 mm. may have a heating coil rated at 300 watts.
