Abstract
476,260. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. June 8, 1936, No. 16002. [Class 39 (i)] A low-pressure gas or vapour discharge tube, such as a lamp, which is energized by A.C., comprises electrodes 1 each of which consists of a hollow conducting body which is closed at one end, is coated internally with electron-emitting material, and has an external surface comprising a refractory conducting material, and the electrode is arranged so that the closed end is nearest the positive column so that it is heated thereby. The electrode may consist of a molybdenum cylinder or box the inner surface of which is provided with a nickel layer or gauze coated with emissive material. A tungsten heater 2 is provided. The heaters, which may be coated with emissive material, form starting electrodes, and are connected in series with the main electrodes, a ballast impedance L and a heating resistance R of a vacuum switch. The series circuit is subsequently opened by the switch to disconnect the heaters and to generate a voltage impulse which starts the main discharge. The current through the lamp is adjusted by a condenser C and an impedance X connected in parallel with the switch.
