Abstract
538,855. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 29; 1940, No. 5731. Convention date, April 1, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] In a high pressure mercury vapour lamp which runs normally with the mercury vapour unsaturated the time of re-starting of the lamp after it has been extinguished is lessened by providing an auxiliary chamber 4 which is surrounded by a. heater coil 8 in series with the discharge; a molybdenum plate 6 inside this chamber is connected to a.radiating plate 7 by a wire 5 the plate 6 and the chamber being blackened to accelerate cooling. If the lamp is extinguished the chamber 4 cools rapidly to lower the vapour pressure within the envelope; this reduces the potential required to produce as glow discharge and restarting, the heavy starting current through the coil 8 heating up the chamber and maintaining the necessary high vapour pressure. A radiating plate may be inside the chamber. The envelope is enclosed in an outer container 13 with a filling of nitrogen. Argon at 2 c.m. is used with the, mercury in the envelope. Discharge current values are given.
