467,078. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 24, 1937, No. 8733. Convention date, March 27, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] In a discharge tube formed of quartz, which contains neon and acquires a temperature higher than 500‹ C., leakage of neon through the heated quartz is prevented by surrounding the tube with an envelope containing neon. The pressure of the neon may be 5-250 mms., preferably 20-100 mms. A quantity of a further gas, such as nitrogen, which does not penetrate quartz may be introduced into the outer envelope to increase the conduction of heat from the tube. The neon within the tube may contain a small quantity of argon, for example 0À2 per cent, to reduce the starting voltage. An example is described in which a high pressure mercury lamp working at 10 atmospheres is supported within an outer bulb containing a mixture of neon and nitrogen at 500 mms. pressure, the partial pressure of the neon being 60 mms. The tube contains neon at 20 mms. The inner and outer diameters of the quartz tube are 4 and 7À5 mms. respectively, and the self-heated electrodes of tungsten coated with barium oxide are spaced 18 mms. apart.
