Abstract
497,822. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 11, 1938, No. 14040. Convention date, May 14, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp 1 is surrounded by a closed transparent screen 4, containing gas or vapour at a pressure sufficient to give convection currents, which is only partially surrounded by a closed envelope 9 containing luminescent material 10. The heat developed is largely dissipated in the portion 5, which does not contain luminescent material. The screen 4 may contain nitrogen at 10 cms. pressure, but preferably a gas such as carbon dioxide which absorbs strongly in the infra-red region is employed. The lamp 1 has a tubular quartz envelope containing rare gas and mercury, at a working pressure of 20 atmospheres.
