Abstract
502,078. Electric incandescent lamps with residual gases. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 26, 1938, No. 34494. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (ii)] In a gas-filled lamp having an operating pressure exceeding 4 atmospheres and with pieces of zirconium arranged in it for absorption of residual gases and impurities that exist in the lamp, the pieces of zirconium are so arranged in a space of the lamp that exhibits a temperature gradient that the temperature assumed by each of these pieces when the lamp is in use corresponds to the optimum temperature for the absorption of a given residual gas or of a given impurity by the zirconium. In an example two pieces of zirconium are arranged on one of the leading-in wires of a lamp comprising a tubular quartz bulb with a gas filling of krypton and nitrogen having an operating pressure of 25 atmospheres. The temperature gradient within the bulb is such that one piece of zirconium assumes a temperature of about 700 C., and the other a temperature of about 500 C., these pieces respectively being capable of absorbing any residual oxygen and hydrogen that may emanate from the quartz of the bulb. The temperature of the pieces of zirconium may be controlled at will by their disposition on the leading-in wires. Alternatively they may bo mounted on a specially provided supporting- rod, or in any other manner.
