Abstract
484,732. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Dec. 9, 1936, No. 33821. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure discharge lamp, such as that described in Specification 472,658, in which the envelope is not cooled generally by circulating liquid or like means, and in which the operating voltage is lower and the life longer than in lamps so cooled and of the same initial light output and efficiency, is provided with controllable means for cooling a portion of the envelope to facilitate restarting if the lamp is extinguished by a momentary fall of the supply voltage. For this purpose a lamp 1, having starting electrodes 61, 7<1> and running electrodes. 6, 7, is provided with a chamber 8 through which water can be passed, fitting closely against a portion of the envelope which must be of quartz or like material with a small coefficient of expansion. The supply of water may be controlled, so that cooling takes place only on the required occasions, by hand or by a voltage relay across the lamp or a current relay in series with it. Specifications 470,770 and 471,426 also are referred to, the latter in the Provisional Specification only.
