Abstract
539,382. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BOURNE, H. K. Feb. 17, 1940, Nos. 3051 and 13149. [Class 39 (i)] In a high pressure metal vapour lamp having massive electrodes spaced a short distance apart the arc is restored after say a temporary interruption of voltage by applying an air blast to give local cooling to the envelope and rapid condensation of the vapour filling and then stopping the cooling and heating the cooled area to restore the vapour pressure to the normal operating value, when the arc has struck the cooling blast is resumed. Pipes 3 direct cooling air on the seals in addition to a cooling air for the main envelope from the pipe 2 ; a separate pipe 5 is associated with a heater 4 in series with the discharge to effect rapid restarting. A Tesla coil 6 is connected to an auxiliary electrode for supplying a starting arc ; normally the heater 4 is short-circuited. The switching and air control may be effected manually or automatically. The heater may be enclosed within the lamp envelope. In a modification the special restarting means are associated with a small extension of the lamp. The heater may be a flame or the electric heater may be supplied independently of the lamp.
