Abstract

[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XL] In starting circuits for low-pressure discharge lamps comprising a thermal switch 5 which is initially closed to connect the heating elements of the lamp in series for preheating and is automatically opened to start the discharge, an auxiliary glow-discharge switch 8 is provided across the lamp and thermal switch to open the lamp circuit when the discharge has failed during a predetermined period and the supply voltage is still on. The switch 8 comprises normally-closed contacts 9' and an electrode 10, connected through a resistance 11 across the supply. If the lamp fails, a glow discharge to electrode 10 causes contacts 9' to open and remain open while the conditions last. The break down voltage of the switch 8 is less than the applied voltage and greater than the normal running voltage of the lamp.
