Abstract

1311195 Supply circuits for discharge lamps; standby supply systems PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 April 1970 [12 April 1969] 16895/70 Heading H2H A discharge lamp 4 is supplied by a circuit the terminals 1, 2 of which are connected to the A.C. mains whilst terminals 7, 8 are connected to an auxiliary source 9 so that an ignition voltage which is higher than the cold ignition voltage of the lamp is supplied and the auxiliary source maintains a potential across the lamp electrodes when the mains fails. Initially, on closing contacts 6, 10 the A.C. mains voltage is insufficient to start the lamp so that no current flows through a relay coil 5 thus ensuring that its contact 11 is closed. The D.C. source 9 is therefore connected to an inverter 13 via contacts 10, 11 and a normally closed contact 12, the high frequency output of the inverter being at a sufficiently high voltage to start the cold lamp, thus causing a current to flow through the coil 5 thereby opening the contact 11. The source 9 is therefore disconnected from the inverter. If the mains voltage fails for a few cycles the contact 11 is closed and the inverter maintains the ionization in the lamp so that the circuit attempts to re-start the lamp when the mains supply returns. At the end of a predetermined time following the mains failure, for example fifteen seconds, a time switch 18 opens the contact 12 and closes a contact 22 so that a motor 21 which rotates a cam disc 20 is energized. A projection on the cam disc intermittently closes a contact 19 to connect the D.C. source to the inverter via the closed contacts 10, 11. The inverter therefore makes periodic attempts to ignite the lamp and succeeds when the lamp has cooled sufficiently. The D.C. source is then disconnected from the inverter by the coil 5 opening the contact 11. Instead of being used, as described above, to reignite the lamp on return of the mains supply after a failure the D.C. source may be used as a standby supply.
