Abstract
464,236. Converting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO. May 25, 1936, No. 14773. Convention date, July 16, 1935. [Class 38 (ii)] The " make alive " electrodes 9 of the valves 5 in a converting arrangement are supplied from the secondary windings 18 of transformers 17, the primaries of which are connected across the main valves through vapour electric discharge paths. In the form shown, a multi-anode discharge device 20 is used. The device 20 may be grid-controlled, the grids being supplied through a phase-shifting transformer 31 so that the moment of ignition in the main valves 5 may be controlled. Preferably, two sets of transformer windings 16, 18 are mounted on a single core and are connected so that the core flux is alternating. In a modification, the auxiliary valve 20 is replaced by auxiliary anodes mounted in the main valves 5,the connections being arranged such that the auxiliary anode circuit of one valve controls the make alive circuit of the adjacent valve. In this arrangement, to enable starting to be effected initially, one of the auxiliary anodes is connected to the cathode through an auxiliary valve and switch. By closing the switch temporarily, a current impulse is allowed to flow sufficient to start a main discharge device.
