Abstract

392,037. Rectifying alternating current. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Sept. 1, 1932, No. 24433. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] Relates to mercury-arc rectifiers of the type in which, by the use of non-energized grids the critical ignition voltage is raised to such a value that the arc is only maintained when auxiliary anodes 4 are energized, and consists in the provision of means whereby in the event of back ignition or short circuit on the D.C. side, the supply to the auxiliary anodes is interrupted, thus extinguishing the main arc. The auxiliary anodes 4 are fed by a transformer 5 through a relay 7. The latter is adapted to open in response to excess current in the primary circuit of the main transformer 1, a current transformer 8 being provided for energizing the relay. The latter may be adapted to operate switches for disconnecting the rectifier on either the D.C. or the A.C. side or to operate signal devices. Further, the relay may be of the type which recloses after a delay period or the reclosing may be made dependent on the vacuum conditions in the rectifier.
