Abstract

418,633. Rectifying alternating current. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 4, 1934, No. 10239. Convention date, April 4, 1933. [Class 38 (ii).] In order to reduce the rate at which short circuit current builds up in rectifiers feeding load circuits having a small time constant, the anodes are subjected to grid control, and the phase of the voltage applied to the grids is retarded in dependence upon the rate of increase of current in the load circuit. In the arrangement shown, chokes 8, normally saturated by windings 8<1> fed with D.C. through a rectifier 9, are included in the supply to the grid transformer 10, and the degree of saturation is decreased in dependence upon the rate of increase of load current by current supplied to windings 8<11> from a current transformer 11 in the cathode lead. A choke may also be included in the cathode lead to assist in retarding the building up of short circuit current. The arrangement is described as particularly applicable to traction systems in which, due to the shortness of feeders on sections near to the substation, short circuits on such sections tend to cause simultaneous release of all the protective devices on the D.C. and A.C. sides and in the anode leads.
