Abstract

398,528. Rectifying alternating current. AKT.-G'ES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. March 8, 1932, No. 6918. Convention date, March 9, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] In a mercury-arc rectifier system in which grids 4 associated with the anodes 3 are maintained at,a potential positive with respect to the anodes during the conducting periods thereof and negative with respect to the anodes during the non-conducting periods, provision is made whereby in the event of overload or back ignition the grids are disconnected from their normal source of voltage and either left isolated or connected to an alternative source of voltage which maintains them negative with respect to the cathode 6. The grid energization under normal conditions is effected by a transformer 12 providing a voltage in phase with and of greater amplitude than the anode voltage, the transformer voltage having imposed thereon a D.C. biassing voltage supplied by a battery 13. This circuit is adapted to be broken under overload or back ignition conditions by a relay-operated switch 10 controlled by a current transformer 5 associated with the primary circuit of the main transformer 1. The grids may, under these conditions, be brought to a potential negative with respect to the cathode by the switching in of a battery 16 by closure of a switch 14 operating in accordance with current in a shunt 8 in the load circuit 7.
