390,914. Rectifying alternating currents. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CLE, Baden, Switzerland. Feb. 2, 1932, No. 3143. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] In and for back ignition and short circuit protection arrangements for mercury-vapour rectifiers provided with means for facilitating ignition of the anodes, a change-over device is provided on the primary side of the normal grid control transformer. In one arrangement the grid control transformer has two primaries displaced 180‹ with respect to one another and a back ignition or short circuit responsive relay changes over the connection of the A.C. supply from one primary to the other. A six-phase rectifier is illustrated as supplied from three phase mains and the star point of the secondary of the grid control transformer is connected through a variable D.C. supply to the cathode so that control of the D.C. output is obtained. The primary of the grid control transformer may be either star or delta connected. In a modification, Fig. 2, in the event of back ignition or short circuit the primary 4 of the grid control transformer is disconnected by relay 10 and short-circuited so that the steady negative bias of the series D.C. supply 16 in the connection to the cathode 3 is rendered effective on all the grids. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 disclosed arrangements in which the protective relay charged over connections in the star point connection of the secondary of the grid transformer to the cathode whereby a swamping D.C. negative bias was inserted .under emergency conditions. The D.C. supply may be obtained from a battery.or a resistance connected as a potential divider in the cathode to anode circuit. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
