395,747. Rectifying alternating current. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GALLIZIA, E., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Jan. 20, 1932, No. 1750. [Class 38 (ii).] To prevent back ignition in a mercury - vapour rectifier having control grids each grid is connected through an impedance with another anode having a leading voltage, the connection being such that during the first part of the cut-off period of each anode its grid has a negative potential relative thereto. In the six-phase rectifier shown in the Figure each grid 18 is connected through a high resistance 19 with the next leading anode. With this connection the grid potential leads the anode potential by 60‹. In a modification the rectifier is supplied from a transformer having two three-phase secondary windings with star-points interconnected through an interphase transformer. With this arrangement each grid may be connected to the next but one leading anode. The Specification describes a construction of control grid consisting of a metal ring supporting a number of parallel metal vanes. In a modification of this the vanes are replaced by a circular sheet of fine mesh wire gauze. Specification 386,429, [Group XL], is referred to.
