Abstract

918,475. Control systems for high-pressure discharge lamps. BASIC PRODUCTS CORPORATION. June 19, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 22009/61. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). Apparatus for starting and operating a highpressure high-intensity discharge lamp 12 of the xenon type wherein the lamp is started by means of alternating current and operated by means of direct current comprises a rectifier 15 over which the lamp 12 is supplied from an A.C. source 11, a combination including a highreactance transformer 13 and a capacitor 39 being included in the supply to the rectifier 15 whereby a substantially constant output voltage and current is maintained at the lamp 12 irrespective of changes in the source voltage, a spark gap oscillator 17 being provided to inject high-frequency high voltages into the lamp circuit by way of a transformer 58 having a ferrite core to initiate ionization of the lamp 12. A relay having a winding 76 in the lamp circuit is provided whereby when the lamp 12 strikes the relay contacts 18 open to remove the supply to the oscillator 17. A safety relay is provided having a winding 77 so that should the lamp fail to strike after a given time the relay contacts 19 open to remove the supply to the oscillator 17. The high-reactance transformer (see Fig. 2) has a primary winding 43 and a secondary winding 44 arranged on the centre limb 42 of a laminated core 41, magnetic shunts 49, 53 having air gaps 52, 55 therein being arranged between the primary and secondary windings.
