Abstract
814,936. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 20, 1957, No. 39659/57. Class 38 (4). A high-pressure gaseous discharge lamp 9 is started by connecting it across the series-connected primary and secondary windings 3, 5 of a transformer 4 and injecting into the circuit, by way of a winding 10, a starting pulse produced by the elements 18, 19, 20, 21, the lamp during normal operation being connected across the secondary winding 5 only. The changeover in the connections is accomplished by means of relays 17, 15, the relay 17 being of the time-delay type. Thus on switching on, the lamp is started on a high voltage by an injected pulse when the spark gap 19 breaks down and after a time delay the contact 16 of relay 17 closes to energize relay 15 whereby the relay 15 operates first to close contact 111 and then to open contact 13 when the lamp 9 is then connected across winding 5 only and operating on a low voltage. In another embodiment the relays 15, 17 are omitted in which case the contacts 11, 13 are operated manually.
