Abstract

896,371. Control circuits for space discharge apparatus. ZEISS IKON A.G. Feb. 9, 1959 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4492/59. Class 38 (4). An operating circuit for a high-pressure gas discharge lamp is arranged so that high-frequency ignition impulses are repeated applied to the lamp, the number of the impulses being limited to a predetermined figure. A highpressure gas discharge lamp 1 is supplied from an alternating current supply over a rectifier 2, a known type of high-frequency ignition apparatus 3 being included in one of the direct current supply leads. When the supply to the lamp 1 is switched on a relay coil 4 is energized from the D.C. supply over a bimetallic switch 16b, a changeover switch 17b and a relay contact 9b. Contact 4a thus closes to complete the supply to the ignition apparatus 3 over a bimetallic switch 16a and changeover switch 17a, whereby a starting impulse is applied to the lamp 1. Simultaneously with the energization of relay coil 4 a condenser 10 commences to charge and when the voltage thereacross is sufficient, a relay coil 9 operates to open contacts 9a, 9b. Relay coil 4 is thus de-energized, and contact 4a releases to remove the supply from the ignition apparatus 3. At the same time the condenser 10 discharges through the relay coil 9 until it can no longer maintain contacts 9a, 9b open. Closure of these contacts once more energizes relay coil 4 to re-instate the supply to the ignition apparatus 3 whereby another starting impulse is applied to the lamp 1 and so on. After a predetermined number of starting impulses have been applied, the bimetallic switches 16a, 16b, 16c become heated sufficiently to operate to prevent further ignition impulses being applied to the lamp. An indicating lamp 18 operates to indicate that switch 16 has operated. An alternative supply circuit to the ignition apparatus 3 is provided by moving changeover switch so as to open switch 17b and close switch 17a on contact 20, the ignition impulses then being controlled by operation of a push-button 19. In a further embodiment the relay coil 4 is arranged to carry the charging current of the condenser. Specification 896,370 is referred to.
