Abstract

896,370. Supply systems for discharge lamps. ZEISS IKON A.G. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 39702/58. Class 38 (4). An ignition device for a high-pressure gas discharge lamp comprises a circuit for repeatedly applying a high-frequency voltage across the lamp, which voltage is disconnected when the lamp strikes. The lamp 14 is connected to a D.C. supply 16, 17 through a relay coil 20. A high-frequency generator 10 is connected to a separate A.C. supply 3, 4 through relay contacts 5 and manually-operated spring-loaded normally open contacts 34, 35 closure of which also closes contacts 32, 33 which energize a relay coil 23 through self-holding contacts 40, 41. Another pair of contacts 42, 43 on the same relay energize a motor 24 driving a cam 26 which periodically closes a pair of contacts 29, 51 in parallel with contacts 34, 35. When the lamp strikes, contacts 5 are opened, thus disconnecting the high-frequency generator 10 from the supply. The relay 5, 20 may be replaced by a potential relay connected across the lamp electrodes or a photo-electric device on which light from the lamp is allowed to fall. A time-switch, or a further cam-operated switch geared to the motor, may be arranged to break the circuit after a given time interval or a determined number of operations.
