Abstract

1496918 Supply systems for gas discharge lamps J CATES 14 Aug 1975 33954/75 Heading H2H A circuit arrangement for starting and operating a low pressure radium discharge lamp 1 from an A.C. supply 3, 4 comprises a glow discharge switch 5 having its normally open contacts connected in series with a capacitor 6 and a resistor 7, a further capacitor 8 being connected across the contacts of the switch 5 and another capacitor 9 being connected for power factor correction. A choke 2 is connected between the input terminal 3 and one of the lamp terminals for ballasting the lamp and the series circuit 5, 6, 7 is connected directly across the lamp. In other embodiments the supply to the lamp is made by way of an autotransformer, part of which may form the ballast device. The circuit 5, 6, 7 may be connected across tappings on the autotransformer or alternatively to a tapping in the choke 2 whilst a still further capacitor may be connected directly across the lamp.
