Abstract

The control circuit for high pressure mercury, iodide or sodium vapour discharge lamps, where the lamps may be part of an overall system containing sections which may be switched out of circuit for economy reasons etc. A transformer or autotransformer (16) maintains the lamp voltage at a level higher than that of the supply and includes in its output winding the lamp (12) and a series inductance (13) which may be an auxiliary or tertiary winding of the same transformer. A power factor correction capacitor (14) is connected across the inductor, transformer and lamp circuit. The primary winding of the transformer may be connected into the supply by a switch (20) and an auxiliary conductor.
