Abstract

829,455. Signalling over power lines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 18, 1958 [July 30, 1957], No. 24098/57. Class 40 (4). A number of discharge lamps are switched on and off by ripple control, each discharge lamp having a power factor correction circuit comprising at least a capacitor and in one or more, but not all circuits, an inductor also the number of inductors being used as a variable to present high impedance to the ripple frequency. As illustrated, 200 high pressure 400-watt mercury vapour lamps are connected between one phase and neutral of a three-phase supply. The ripple current injected over transformer T2 produces 5 volts at 455 cycles to which relays R1 to R200 respond, or at 480 cycles to which the relays fall back. Each of the lamps L1 to L200 is in series with a ballast inductor and a capacitative shunt is provided as power factor correction. The number of inductors I, typically 116, is chosen to present the ripple frequency generator of 455 cycles with a high impedance and the inductors are distributed as uniformly as possible along the power line.
