Abstract

739,045. Control systems for space discharge apparatus. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 9, 1952 [June 8, 1951], No. 13660/51. Class 38 (4). Dimming of a plurality of electric discharge lamps 10 is effected by a variable impedance 20 connected in shunt with an auxiliary winding 19 of a respective choke 17 serially connected with each lamp to A.C. supply terminals L, N, the main winding 18 of each choke 17 and its lamp 10 being connected in parallel with the other main windings and lamp. As shown each auxiliary winding 19 has a respective variable impedance 20 but in other embodiments all the auxiliary windings 19 are serially connected with a single, commoning variable impedance 20 which may be a resistance. Also as shown, for use in theatre lighting for example, there may be connected a further variable impedance 26 in either lead to the A.C. supply terminal L or N which further impedance 26 dims the lamps to a degree present for each lamp individually by impedance 20. For lamps requiring electrode preheating starting switches or heating transformers 21 may be provided, while for assisting starting each lamp may have an earthed external starting strip 25. In Fig. 4, not shown, each lamp may be replaced by two in series, and each choke auxiliary winding 19 may have a manually or automatically operable switch by which the winding is shorted should its associated lamp not strike. The Provisional Specification refers to the dimming of a single discharge lamp. Specification 720,264 is referred to.
