Abstract

738,573. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 7, 1952 [Dec. 3, 1951; Jan. 28, 1952], Nos. 28316/51 and 2339/52. Class 38 (4). A hot cathode discharge lamp 10 serially connected with a ballast impedance 14, 15 across input terminals 16, 20 is started by an electromagnetic relay having a first switch 21 arranged to serially interconnect the two filamentary electrodes 12, 18 of the lamp through the ballast to the source and having an operating coil 22 connected either in shunt, or as shown, in series, with a resistor 23 having a negative resistance/temperature coefficient; the circuit is such that, on starting, the switch 21 is closed to permit filament heating for a period predetermined by the time taken for the resistance of resistor 23 to fall due to heating thereof by current flow, whereupon the relay opens the first switch to start the lamp and maintains it open during running. As shown, the coil 22 and resistor 23 are shunted across the resistive part 14 of the ballast impedance and during running the resistor 23 is shunted by a second switch 24 of the relay. Two or more series-connected lamps may replace the single lamp shown, there being provided a respective first switch 21 for each lamp and all such switches operating sequentially. The circuit shown operates on D.C., but in a modification, not shown, for use on A.C., the coil 22 and resistor 23 in series are shunted across an auxiliary winding on the ballast inductance 15. In the embodiment wherein the coil 22 is shunted by resistor 23 such components are shunted, through an impedance, across the lamp the switch 21 being in this case normally open instead of normally closed as shown.
