782,854. Supply systems for space-discharge lamps; substituting sources in service. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1956 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 4064/55. Class 38 (4). A circuit for operating two or more parallel connected electric discharge lamps 15 from either an A.C. or D.C. source comprises a relay 1 whose operating winding 14, in the embodiment shown, when energized by the A.C. source at terminals 10, 11 to which it is connected, operates its switch to connect such A.C. terminals to relay output terminals 6, 8 and when de-energized by cessation or low voltage of the A.C. source causes the switch to connect D.C. source terminals 12, 13 to relay output terminals 7, 9; hence when the A.C. source is operative the lamps are supplied via relay terminals 6, 8 in parallel circuits, each of which consists of a series arrangement of the lamp 15 and ballast inductors and capacitors 21, 23, and when it fails they are supplied with D.C. via relay terminals 7, 9 in similar series circuits but in which ballast resistors 22 are substituted for capacitors 23. The D.C. source may be a storage battery. Each lamp may be replaced by two or more series connected lamps, may be of the fluorescent type, shunted by a respective thermal or glow discharge starting device 24, and may have, not shown, either cold or filamentary cathodes.
