Abstract
1,178,956. Supply systems for discharge lamps. DOMINITWERKE G.m.b.H. 29 April, 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 20237/68. Heading H2H. Fluorescent tube is connected to two supplies of different frequencies in such a way that lighting is not interrupted when one supply fails. The tube 1 is supplied from the mains 4 through a choke 2 and is also connected to a battery supply 8 by way of an inverter 12. The battery is charged from the mains through a transformer 5, bridge 6 and diode 7. During mains operation, an electronic switch 13 on the inverter is held open by a voltage appearing at the terminal 14 of the bridge 6, but when the mains voltage falls below a preset value, the switch 13 closes so that the tube 1 is supplied from the battery 8. The tube may operate with both sources connected simultaneously if the mains voltage is low but not zero. Restoration of the mains causes the switch 13 to open, disconnecting the battery supply. A resonant LC circuit 9, 10 enables the tube to be ignited when only the battery supply is available, since a high voltage will be generated across the inductor 10 when the inverter is switched on. The circuit components may be so chosen that the tube output is lower on battery operation than on mains supply.
