Abstract

1,183,543. Supply systems for gas discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 7 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 48784/67. Heading H2H. Circuit for starting and operating a discharge lamp includes a series-resonant LC circuit in series with a voltage breakdown device and a suppressor inductance. In use, the breakdown device initiates oscillations for starting the lamp, and high frequency harmonics are suppressed by the inductance. In the circuit shown in Fig. 1, a ballast choke 3 operates as an autotransformer, the primary EF of which forms a series-resonant circuit with a capacitor 5. Initially, the capacitor is charged through a diode 6 from an A.C. source Vs until a Zener diode 10 breaks down and triggers a thyristor 8. Free oscillations at a frequency of the order of several kilocycles per second are now set up in the inductance EF & capacitor 5 until blocked by the thyristor 8 switching off. Radio frequency harmonics of the resonant oscillations also tend to arise, but these are suppressed by the low-value inductance 7. The thyristor 8 will continue to fire at intervals of one or more supply cycles until the lamp is started. The lamp discharge is then maintained by the supply Vs and the high frequency oscillations are short-circuited through the lamp. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the voltage breakdown device takes the form of a pair of anti-parallel Shockley diodes.
