Abstract

1,208,489. Igniting discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 July, 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 35619/68. Heading H2H. Gas and/or vapour discharge lamps are ignited and fed in a circuit which has a semiconductor switching device 9 which ceases to conduct when current in it due to discharge of a capacitor 4 across the lamp 5 tends to reverse and which is controlled to conduct again after a time greater than 1/4f where f is the natural frequency of the circuit across the input terminals 1, 2 which includes the capacitor 4. This provides a derived high frequency ignition voltage for a discharge lamp with or without heaters 6, 7. In Fig. 4 an autotransformer 65 has part of its winding in the capacitor circuit to increase the ignition voltage and the control circuit 69 operates on reverse parallel semiconductor rectifiers 31<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>1</SP>. This control circuit has discs 37<SP>1</SP>, 40 which break down when respective capacitors 36<SP>1</SP>, 39<SP>1</SP> are charged and make the thyristors 31<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>1</SP> conduct. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a single controlled rectifier is connected in the circuit through a rectifier bridge.
