Abstract
1,170,020. Ignition systems. TECUMSEH PRODUCTS CO. July 22, 1968 [July 20, 1967], No.34810/68. Heading F1B. An ignition system of capacitor discharge type for igniting a combustible charge in an internalcombustion engine comprises a source of electrical energy 38, a capacitor 62, a first series circuit coupled across the source for charging the capacitor and including an asymmetrical conducting device 60 and a transformer primary winding 64, an electronic control device (controlled rectifier) 74 having a main current conducting path and further having a control input 80 for controlling conduction in the main path, trigger means 52 operatively coupled to the control input to initiate conduction in the main path in accordance with predetermined timing of the engine and a second series circuit for discharging the capacitor in one direction and comprising the capacitor the winding and the main current path of the electronic control device 74. Circuit means (Zener diode) 58 has first and second terminals and provides a first low impedance path between the terminals for current in a first forward direction therethrough and provides a high impedance path between the terminals in a reverse direction for applied reverse voltage less than a critical reverse breakdown voltage, the circuit means further providing a second low impedance path in the reverse direction between the terminals when applied reverse voltages are greater than the critical voltage. The system further comprises a third series circuit for discharging the capacitor in an opposite direction and including the capacitor 62 the winding 64 and the first low impedance path 58. In a modification (not shown) the diode 58 is replaced by a diode associated with a resistor and a neon lamp. In another modification a silicon diode is connected in series between the cathode of the controlled rectifier 74 and the output terminal 46. Connected across the coil 52 is a voltage divider comprising a resistor and a thermistor.
