Abstract

1308930 Ignition systems MOTOROLA INC 10 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 58583/70 Heading F1B A capacitor discharge ignition system comprises a storage capacitor 12,an energy supply circuit 14a, 16, coupled to the storage capacitor for delivering thereto a high voltage electrical energy pulse substantially immediately after a previous energy pulse has been discharged therefrom and applied to a primary winding 18a of an ignition coil 18, an electronic switch 20 connected to the storage capacitor and arranged for connection to the primary winding 18a of the ignition coil, an external pulse circuit component 22 coupled to the electronic switch to render the same conductive in response to a pulse applied thereto substantially instantaneously to discharge the storage capacitor 12 into the primary winding 18a of the ignition coil within a relatively short predetermined time interval to initiate a spark between the electrode 26 connected to the secondary winding 8b and a silicon controlled rectifier circuit 40 connected in circuit with the electronic switch and arranged for connection to the primary winding of the ignition coil, the silicon controlled rectifier being substantially immediately responsive to the discharge of the storage capacitor to extend the duration of current flow through the primary winding of the ignition coil beyond that of the relatively short predetermined time interval to increase the duration of the spark discharge produced between the electrodes connected to the secondary winding. The system may be controlled by a mechanical breaker point assembly or by an electromagnetic device or by electrical impulses developed by a light emitting source.
