Abstract

755,776. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. May 14, 1954 [May 16, 1953], No. 14283/54. Class 38 (4). A fluorescent electric discharge lamp starting and operating circuit, comprising a filamentary preheatable electrode gas-discharge lamp 1 serially connected with an inductive ballast winding 4 across A.C. source terminals A, B, in parallel with a similar lamp 2 serially connected with an inductive ballast winding 5 and at least one condenser 6 across said source terminals, is provided with an electrode heating transformer 8 for heating one or both electrodes 3 of each lamp at least during starting thereof, the primary winding of the transformer 8 being connected to the source terminals A, B, respectively through a part only of the first winding 4 and at least through an impedance, as shown, an extension of the second winding 5; the voltage appearing across the impedance is arranged to be dependent upon the current passing through the second lamp 2 and the value of the impedance is such that the primary winding voltage when the lamps are operating is less than that across terminals A, B or is substantially zero, whereby the electrode heating current is reduced from the value obtaining before the lamps started running. In modifications various arrangements and connections of the winding 5, its extension and the condenser 6 are described, and a further condenser 6 may replace the extension of winding 5.
