Abstract

712,815. Supply and protective arrangements for space discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CATES, J. May 25, 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 10066/50. Class 38(4) In a supply circuit for one or a plurality of series-connected low-pressure heatablecathode electric discharge lamps T1, T2 wherein a cathode-heating transformer has a primary winding P connected across A.C. supply terminals L, N and heating secondary windings S1...S3 arranged for connection to the lamp cathodes F1...F4, and wherein there are lamp discharge current supply connections between the primary winding and secondary windings S1, S2, the primary winding is connected to the input terminals in series with a capacitor C4 forming part of lamp ballast impedance, and a further, non-resonant, capacitor C3 is connected in series with the primary winding as regards its connection across the lamp(s) to prevent the generation and flow of direct current through such winding should one cathode of a lamp fail to give adequate electron emission. As shown, the capacitor C3 may be in the discharge path and form part of the ballast, or it may be out of such path, Fig. 3 (not shown). The ballast includes a current wave-form improving choke I, the circuit includes radio interference suppression, condensers C2, C5, and the lamp(s) have starting strips E which may be earthed. The overall ballast may be inductive or capacitive, and a capacitive circuit may operate in parallel with an inductive circuit to reduce stroboscopic. flicker and to correct the power factor. Figs. 3, 4 and 6 (not shown), illustrate various single-lamp circuit arrangements.
