Abstract

757,080. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. BROWN, R. Feb. 13, 1950 [Feb. 11, 1949], No. 12404/52. Divided out of 757,067. Class 38 (4). A circuit for two or more low-pressure fluorescent discharge lamps 10, 11 having filamentary electrodes 13... 16 comprises a resistive stabilizing impedance and a single transformer for supplying pre-heating current to all the lamp filaments, the primary winding 17 of such transformer being connected in shunt with at least one of the lamps and in series, across an A.C. supply, with the resistive impedance for that lamp or lamps in respect of which the shunt connection subsists. The impedance is such that its resistance is low when the impedance is cold and high when hot and may be an incandescent filament lamp 12. The transformer may be auto-wound, the preheating current being supplied from both primary winding tappings and a separate secondary winding 18. As shown, there are two series-connected lamps, but the Complete Specification drawing, not shown, illustrates two parallel connected lamps each having a separate stabilizing impedance and one having a series capacitor which during starting is in resonance, or nearly in resonance, with the transformer primary winding. Starting is arrested by two metal strips running closely along the whole lamp envelope, which strips may be the edges of a U-shaped conductor carrying part of the lamp fitting and connected to the lamp electrodes or to the supply through a resistance and/or a condenser. Specification 757,067 is referred to.
