Abstract
1,017,009. Control systems for low pressure discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 25, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963], No. 46878/63. Heading H2H. A circuit to provide dimming of a low-pressure discharge lamp of the type having a heating element 4 associated with the lamp 1, which may be a sodium type used particularly for an airport beacon or for lighting, comprises an autotransformer 12, 13 supplying both the element 4 and filaments 2, 3 and a frequencysensitive reactor 11 carrying the discharge current, both being supplied from another autotransformer 5. By varying the frequency and voltage of the supply 20 the discharge current and lamp heating may be varied independently so as to give for example reduced illumination at night. A number of transformers 5 may be connected in series or parallel or they may be replaced by tapped resistors. In an alternative arrangement the transformers 5 are in series with a group of parallel tuned resonant filters (Fig. 3, not shown).
