Abstract
643,781. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. NATHANSON, M. Jan. 27, 1947, No. 2519. [Class 38 (iv)] Series systems.-To start a plurality of series connected discharge lamps 36-38 from an A.C. source. 20 of voltage substantially lower than the sum of the lamp striking voltages, a byepass impedance, such as condensers 46, 51, are connected between the series functions of the lamps and that terminal of the supply to which is connected the usual series ballast, e.g. condenser 40, so that adequate starting voltage is applied to each lamp in turn as the preceding lamp strikes. The byepass and. ballast impedances may alternatively constitute inductances. Power factor improvement may be effected by parallel connecting two groups of lamps, or one group and a single lamp 39, provided respectively with capacitive and inductive ballasts and byepass impedances. The lamps may be supplied through an auto transformer in which case the inductive ballast may be dispensed with by supplying the inductive lamp group through a separate secondary winding 11 spaced from the primary winding 9 by a magnetic shunt 17.
