Abstract

671,155. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. SOC. ANON. POUR LES APPLICATIONS DE L'ELECTRICITE ET DES GAZ RARES-ETABLISSEMENTS CLAUDEPAZ ET SILVA. Feb. 28, 1950 [March 11, 1949; Oct. 25, 1949], No. 5121/50. Class 38 (iv). Two parallel operating discharge lamps 3, 4 having filamentary electrodes 31, 32 and 41, 42 are supplied through ballast impedances comprising respectively for lamp 3 an inductance and lamp 4 an inductance 11 in series with a predominant capacitative reactance 12 to give a resultant high-power factor and reduce the stroboscopic effect, the preheating of the electrodes being effected from a transformer 61, 81 associated with each lamp and comprising a primary winding 58, 88 in parallel with the lamp and a pair of auto-connected secondary windings 52, 53 and 82, 83 for supplying the heating current, so as to obtain a reduction in heating current whilst the lamp is operating. The electrodes may be connected across the outer part of the secondary windings as shown, so as to increase the voltage applied to the lamp. The two lamps and associated ballasts may be connected to the supply 1, 2 through a single auto-transformer 5-10 provided with a high leakage reactance to permit the separate inductive ballast for lamp 3 to be dispensed with. An external starting strip, preferably connected to an electrode through a high resistance, may be provided to improve starting.
