Abstract
659,921. Supply systems for space discharge lamps; series systems. EKCO-ENSIGN ELECTRIC, Ltd., and STICKLEY, W. A. March 23, 1949, No. 7841. [Class 38 (iv)] To ensure adequate preheating and simultaneous starting of a pair of fluorescent discharge lamps A, B having filamentary electrodes, the ballast, e.g. a choke C, a heater of one lamp, a starting switch S, the primary winding P of a heating transformer T having leakage reactance, a heater of the other lamp, are all in series across the supply X, the transformer having two similar secondary windings W<SP>1</SP>, W2 connected respectively to the other two lamp heaters with a single connection between the two latter. The transformer is preferably of the shell type with the windings on the central limb, the primary being disposed between and separated from the secondary windings by magnetic shunts, Fig. 2 (not shown). The voltage across each secondary winding is preferably made approximately twice that across the primary winding.
