Abstract

669,655. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. EKCO-ENSIGN ELECTRIC, Ltd., and STICKLEY, W. A. June 19, 1950 [June 18, 1949], No. 16251/49. Class 38 (iv). A discharge lamp L is supplied from the secondary SW of a leaky transformer having that end of its primary PW connected to the phase supply terminal P also connected with the secondary at or near one end thereof, thereby providing a high open circuit starting voltage and adequate ballasting with a high power during running. A plurality of lamps, each with its own transformer, may be supplied from a common dimming resistance R by either connecting the primaries of the transformers in parallel, as shown, or in series, the connection between the primary and secondary windings in the latter arrangement, being nearer the phase supply lead. The transformer is preferably of the shell type adjustment of the leakage reactance being effected by varying the relative disposition of the primary and secondary windings spaced along the central limb. The transformer secondary may be tapped to provide filament heating or a starting switch may be used.
