Abstract

498,107. Supply systems for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. fiir Elektrische Gl³hlampen) Dec. 30, 1937, No. 36097. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] An electric discharge device, e.g. a lowpressure mercury-vapour lamp 1, having thermionic electrodes 2 heated independently of the discharge is shunted by a condenser 8 and connected to A.C. mains through a choke 6, the condenser circuit including in series the primary winding 9 of at least one transformer 4, the secondary of which supplies heating current to one of the electrodes 2. By this means the condenser 8 which is used for starting may be kept in circuit and be available for re-starting whilst the current in the condenser circuit during normal running is limited. Two transformers 4 may be provided, one for each electrode 2. The transformers may have a common core. The inductance 6 may be in two parts arranged in series at opposite ends of the tube 1 and the electrodes 2 may be indirectly heated..
