Abstract

662,977. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. April 19, 1950 [April 20, 1949], No. 10479/49. Class 38 (iv). Automatic reduction of the heating current supplied to the filamentary electrodes of a discharge lamp 3, upon initiation of the lamp discharge, is obtained by supplying the primary 1 of the heating transformer through a capacitance 2 and connecting the lamp through a ballast impedance 4 across the capacitance and part only of the transformer primary so that when preheating the electrodes the transformer primary carries the capacitance current and upon the lamp discharge being initiated part of the primary winding also carries the lamp current, the phase difference between the two currents resulting in reduction of the preheating current supplied by secondary windings 5, 6. Provision may be made for varying the proportion of the primary winding in parallel with the lamp by, for example, adjustable tappings on the primary winding. The capacitance need be no greater than that normally required for power factor correction purposes. Specification 634,510 is referred to.
