Abstract

634,510. Supply systems for discharge lamps. SERNER, A., and CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. April 3, 1947, No. 9155. [Class 38 (iv)] A transformer having two secondary windings S1, S2 for supplying heating current to the individual filamentary electrodes of a discharge lamp D has a primary winding PO connected in series with a condenser C in a non-resonant circuit across the current supply leads. The condenser voltage is effective for starting the lamp and is substantially independent of the voltage drop across the lamp or of the value of the stabilizing ballast LO which is connected in series with the lamp in a circuit in parallel relation with the condenser. When the lamp starts the wattless compound of the lamp current reduces the excitation of the transformer and the current in the electrodes, a second primary winding PX being provided in the arrangement according to Fig. 2 wherein a condenser CX makes the lamp current lead. When such condenser is not used the lamp current is taken through the primary winding PO by a direct connection from an electrode to a point between the condenser C and winding PO.
