Abstract

756,167. Supply systems for space-discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 25, 1953 [Sept. 30, 1952], No. 26487/53. Class 38 (4). A lighting apparatus embodies two parallel connected impedance arms each comprising a tubular arc-discharge lamp l1, l2 having preheated filament electrodes not shown, one of two magnetically coupled together sections of a shoot winding D having a common tap E, and possibly part of the primary winding T of a filament heating transformer, the impedance arms are connected to the terminals M, M of the apparatus in series with a common ballast impedance L and in shunt with at least part of the primary winding T of the transformer, and the arms are so dimensioned and the two sections are so arranged that when the lamps are ignited the currents in the sections produce substantially equal and opposite magnetic fluxes in the choke core, not shown. In Fig. 2, not shown, all the electrodes are heated by secondary windings on the transformer, but, as shown, those of one lamp l, are heated by secondary windings sl<SP>11</SP>, sl<SP>111</SP>, coupled to the choke winding D. Also, as shown, the common tap E is a centre tap, but in another embodiment, Fig. 4, not shown, the tap is off-centre and the lamps l1, l2 are connected respectively across step-up and step-down auto-connected parts of the transformer winding T.
