Abstract
895,970. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1959 [Dec. 18, 1958], No. 40905/58. Class 38 (4). A starting and operating circuit for two or more electric discharge lamps includes two branches connected in parallel between the input terminals 1, 2 of a D.C. supply for the discharge currents, each branch comprising a ballast resistor 4 or 8, a choke coil 3 or 7 and lamps such as L1 to L8 or L9 to L16, the choke coils 3, 7 being wound on a common magnetic core in opposite senses so that the discharge currents in the two branches produce equal and opposite magnetic fluxes in the core, and starting terminals 14, 17 to which an alternating voltage to facilitate starting can be applied. In operation, and as applied to a train lighting installation, the input terminals 1 and 2 are supplied from the D.C. track circuit and the A.C. starting terminals 14, 17 are supplied from a power transistor oscillator 13 fed from the train's batteries and provided with a further output terminal 15. Transformers 19, only two of which are shown, each having three secondary windings 20, 21, 22, provide electrode heating current for the lamps and are connected in parallel between the terminals 14, 15 with a resistor 23, of negative temperature coefficient of resistance, in circuit to limit the heating current at starting. A starting voltage comprising the direct voltage across terminals 1 and 2 together with the alternating voltage across terminals 14 and 17 appears across the lamps L1 to L8, and by way of the coupled coils 3 and 7, across the lamps L9 and L10. When the lamps have started the high inductance of the coils 3 and 7, resulting from the fact that the discharge currents flowing through them produce no net magnetizing flux, prevents current passing from the A.C. terminals 14 and 17 to the direct current source, and the amount of this current passing through the lamps is limited by a capacitor 18 connected between terminal 17 and a terminal 16 of the supply 13.
